The spread of infectious diseases occurs at various spatial and temporal scales, from the interplay between pathogen dynamics and immune responses within individual hosts to the global patterns of epidemic spread. Consequently, mathematical models that describe the dynamics of infectious diseases can be defined at different spatial scales. However, just as the different scales of epidemic dynamics interact with one another, it becomes crucial to determine how mathematical models can effectively account for the optimal spatial and temporal scale. Additionally, it is essential to explore how different scales can be integrated and identify the methodologies required for this purpose, whether they already exist or need to be developed. Only models that correctly handle these scales can help inform epidemic response and public health action, identifying the right intervention at the right place and time.
In this workshop, we aim to delve into these questions by examining various scales, ranging from the dynamics within individual hosts to the analysis of contact networks and the diffusion of epidemics driven by mobility. Furthermore, we will explore both the potential advantages and challenges associated with emerging methodologies designed to facilitate the integration of different scales. This workshop is a joint effort of the working groups Mesoscopic Scales of Epidemic Dynamics and Modeling of Within-Host Dynamics of the Action Coordonnée Modélisation des maladies infectieuses of the ANRS-MIE (INSERM agency for the research on HIV, TB, STI, viral hepatitis and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases). Check out our list of speakers and program! This workshop is funded by the AC Modélisation des maladies infectieuses of the ANRS-MIE.
